Released on ECM in 1978, this album is by Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava, who recorded extensively for the adventurous German jazz labels ECM and JAPO. Although his music ranges widely from modal jazz to contemporary and free improvisation, his distinctive tone and memorable melodic phrasing remain unmistakable. Rava leads a quartet featuring Roswell Rudd on trombone, J.-F. Jenny-Clark on bass, and Aldo Romano on drums. A1 begins with one of Rava’s characteristically warm and melancholy-filled melodies before developing in a more experimental direction, while B1 races forward with a cool, hard-boiled atmosphere reminiscent of the soundtrack to a detective film. Throughout, these seasoned jazz musicians deliver mature yet spiritual contemporary jazz at the height of their powers. Roswell Rudd’s trombone sounds almost like the call of an elephant, and it is absolutely fantastic. Original German pressing with textured sleeve.
