Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava—celebrated for his fine work on ECM and JAPO—leads this outstanding 1987 quintet session, issued on Italy’s Soul Note label. The group features Angusto Mancinelli (guitar), John Taylor (piano), Furio Di Castri (bass) and American drummer Bruce Ditmas—known for collaborations with Jaco Pastorius and Pat Metheny, as well as the cult classic Aeray Dust. All compositions are Rava originals. Highlights include A2, where Rava’s trumpet—tinged with a Don Cherry–like exoticism—unfolds over an open, buoyant rhythm section; A3, an Electric Miles–flavored burner propelled by Mancinelli’s agressive electric guitar; and B2, a gently drifting pastoral exchange between Taylor’s emotive piano and Rava’s lyrical horn. A masterfully refined set, rich in atmosphere and poetic imagery. Highly, highly recommended.
