Influenced by soul singers such as Aretha Franklin, Texas-born American singer Esther Phillips began her career at the age of 14 and got her break in 1949 after entering an amateur contest at a club owned by Johnny Otis. Following her acclaimed masterpiece Performance, she released this album in 1975 on Creed Taylor’s Kudu label. The recording, done at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio, features a stellar lineup of musicians including guitarist Joe Beck, Steve Khan (g), Mike Brecker (ts), Randy Brecker (tp), Fred Wesley (tb), Patti Austin (vo), and Tasha Thomas (vo), among others from across genres. With Beck’s superb arrangements, Phillips’ gospel-infused vocals shine through blues, soul, R&B, disco, and other forms of Black music, making this a classic. The standout B1 track—originally by Little Anthony and the Imperials and also widely known through Sergio Mendes’ cover—is a tune perfect for the early morning dance floor, with an unforgettable melody that soars right after the chorus.
