George Russell, an American composer/pianist hailing from Ohio, has been active since the 1950s, showcasing a diverse range of styles from solos to jazz orchestras. He is also known for his collaborations with Don Cherry. This album, released in 1973, features a live performance recorded in a Norwegian church in 1971. It includes participation from renowned Nordic musicians familiar from various ECM productions such as Arild Andersen (bass), Terje Rypdal (guitar), Bobo Stenson (piano), Jan Garbarek (tenor sax), Jon Christensen (percussion), and the chorus group The Musikk Konservatoriet of Oslo. The live performance is intense and marvelous, creating an innovative space where spiritual performances and choruses reminiscent of Archie Shepp and Black Jazz intertwine. Particularly impressive is side B, which transitions into chaos as it progresses along the timeline, evoking feelings of darkness and psychedelics. Highly recommended, especially for its powerful and creative formation of atmosphere. This is a reissue in 1983 on Soul Note.
