Forward Motion
Progressions
Hep Records (UK) 1988
2033 (LP)
sleeve : EX(SOC, some very faint dirt) media : NM-/NM-(some very slight crackle noise in parts)
The second album from 1985 by Forward Motion, a jazz quartet featuring Tommy Smith (ts), who also participated in the Milan Svoboda Big Band and the Ahmad Mansour Quartet, along with Lazlo Gardonyi (p), Terje Gewelt (b), and Ian Froman (ds). All six tracks are original scores by the band members. While retaining a spiritual quality that hints at the influence of Pharoah Sanders, they present a range from straight-ahead modal jazz to mellow, ethereal urban jazz and contemporary jazz, making this an excellent work that wouldn't feel out of place on ECM. Incidentally, the audio was recorded in Oslo, Norway, in 1985, and Jan Erik Kongsbaug, who has worked on numerous ECM productions as Manfred Eicher's right-hand man, handled the recording engineering. The sound quality is therefore very pleasant.
