Afrikanischer Frühling

A 1980 live album by Cameroon-born multi-instrumentalist Francis Bebey, who was active mainly in France and across Europe, recorded in concert in Germany. Interspersed with narration, Bebey performs warm, muffled percussion and minimal, primitive acoustic guitar lines that seem to reach back toward the roots of the blues, while his voice unfolds in African chants with an almost poetry-reading quality. The overall atmosphere is remarkably warm, intimate, and comforting. Bebey is often celebrated for his obscure African recordings featuring inexpensive electronic instruments, but this album shows just how compelling his acoustic side could be as well.
