Swiss trumpeter Franco Ambrosetti—active since the early 1960s in groups led by Giorgio Azzolini and Franco Tonani, and later a member of the Miroslav Vitous Group, contributing to their 1981 ECM release—issued this leader album on Italy’s Dire label in 1973. This edition is the 1977 reissue with alternate artwork. Recorded in 1972 at a studio in Milan, the album features a quartet with Klaus Koning (p), Peter Frei (b), and Peter Schmidlin (ds). It includes a cool cover of a Herbie Hancock classic on A1, an Ambrosetti original on A2 built around a gentle and satisfying waltz rhythm, and a mysterious tango-jazz piece by George Gruntz on B1. A superb post-bop session marked by a refined, burnished sophistication. Koning is credited with forte-piano, though the instrument’s timbre often resembles that of an electric piano.
A1: The Sorcerer
A2: English Waltz
