A fine 1988 album by the quartet led by French saxophonist Francois Jeanneau, well known for the excellent recordings he made with Henri Texier and Daniel Humair in trio format. Joining him here are some of the key figures of the 1980s French jazz scene, including Michel Benita on bass and Andy Emler on piano, alongside Chicago-born American drummer Aaron Scott. A highly satisfying contemporary jazz set throughout, with highlights such as A2, where Emler’s elegant piano paints a quiet, atmospheric landscape, and A4, driven by Scott’s primitive drumming and Jeanneau’s swaying soprano lines. Recommended for listeners with a taste for ECM-style contemporary jazz.
A2: Sequence 4
A4: Calypso Facto
