Released in 1976, this was the second album as a leader by French saxophonist François Jeanneau, who also produced outstanding work in a trio with Henri Texier and Daniel Humair. Jeanneau leads a quartet featuring Jean-François Jenny-Clark on bass, Michel Graillier on piano, and Aldo Romano on drums and percussion. A1 immediately draws the listener in, sustaining a taut yet highly pleasurable sense of tension as the musicians perform with remarkable intensity. Other highlights include A3, distinguished by its cool yet impassioned sound. Rooted in modal jazz while allowing a wide range of musical elements to intersect and unfold, the album presents spiritual jazz filled throughout with a progressive sensibility. One of the finest works in Jeanneau’s discography. Absolutely superb. Original French pressing.
