This 1967 album by Hungarian guitarist Gabor Szabo—discovered by drummer Chico Hamilton and known for forging a unique style that absorbed jazz, rock, and world-music influences, as well as for collaborations with Cal Tjader and Gary McFarland—captures a live performance recorded in April of that year at The Jazz Workshop in Boston. Featuring Jimmy Stewart (g), Louis Kabok (b), Hal Gordon (per), and Marty Morrell (ds), the quintet performs mainly original compositions by Szabo and Stewart, along with distinctive arrangements of covers such as Sonny & Cher’s 1966 U.S. hit “The Beat Goes On,” music from the soundtrack of A Man and a Woman scored by Francis Lai, and a Cole Porter standard. Szabo’s psychedelic, gypsy-infused guitar work shines throughout.
