Released in 1967, this album by Hungarian guitarist Gabor Szabo—discovered by drummer Chico Hamilton and known for forging a unique style that absorbed jazz, rock, and world music while also collaborating with artists such as Cal Tjader and Gary McFarland—features Herb Ellis (g), Howard Roberts (g), Mike Melvoin (p), Jimmy Gordon (ds), and Victor Feldman (per). It also includes The California Dreamers, a vocal group assembled for several Impulse! recordings produced by Bob Thiele, who also produced this album. From songs off The Beatles’ masterpiece Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band to covers of The Mamas & the Papas and Jefferson Airplane, the record offers jazz infused with beat-rock sensibilities, vividly reflecting the American West Coast’s hippie-era zeitgeist.
