Released on ECM in 1987, this album is by American vibraphonist Gary Burton, who has remained active since the early 1960s and left behind numerous outstanding recordings for the label. The ensemble features Makoto Ozone on piano, Tommy Smith on saxophone, Steve Swallow on bass, and Martin Richards on drums. The young Ozone had previously appeared on Burton’s 1985 album Real Life Hits. Although the album is centered mainly around light, smoothly swinging jazz, it also contains many beautiful pieces that evoke the glittering urban nightscape depicted in its artwork. Highlights include A1, where Ozone’s elegant piano and the young prodigy Smith’s urban-mellow soprano saxophone float gracefully through the music, and the warm B2, colored by Burton’s moist, resonant vibraphone tones and their richly pleasing overtones. Original German pressing.

A1: The Last Clown
B2: Cool Train
