An album released in 1974 by Gary Burton, the American vibraphonist active since the early 1960s and known for many outstanding recordings on ECM. This work features compositions by Michael Gibbs, renowned for his orchestral arrangements in progressive and hard rock contexts. Performed by Burton’s quartet — Mick Goodrick (g), Steve Swallow (b), and Ted Seibs (ds) — together with the NDR Symphony Orchestra of Hamburg, Germany, it presents a grand and dramatic example of chamber orchestra jazz. The tracks where Burton’s vibraphone solos and the quartet’s interplay take center stage are especially magnificent.
