This 1982 leader album by American jazz bassist Gary Peacock, released on ECM, features a quartet that includes ECM regulars Jan Garbarek (tenor and soprano saxophones) and Jack DeJohnette (drums), along with Polish jazz icon Tomasz Stańko on trumpet. On the opening track (A1), Stańko’s instantly recognizable, slightly distorted trumpet solos and Peacock’s resonant bass tones create a deeply spiritual atmosphere within the silence. On B3, DeJohnette’s spacious drumming underpins experimental horn interplay between Garbarek and Stańko, sustaining an almost tangible tension as the musicians breathe together in a delicate balance of intensity and calm. The album’s sound is profoundly spiritual—each member contributing with remarkable sensitivity and focus. The interplay between Garbarek and Stańko, both possessing uniquely distinctive tones and sonic philosophies, is particularly striking. As a Japanese domestic pressing from ECM’s Trio Records era, the sound quality is impressively high.
A1: Voice from the Past
