Although firmly rooted in classical training, British composer and double bassist Gavin Bryars is known for his forward-thinking approach—releasing works on Brian Eno’s Obscure Records label and later inviting Aphex Twin (Richard D. James) to remix his music in the 1990s. This masterpiece, issued in 1991 on ECM’s contemporary music imprint ECM New Series, stands as one of his finest. While chamber music in form, it sustains a profound sense of ambience with strong drone-like elements, creating a deeply immersive sound world. Featuring classical performers as well as Bill Frisell on guitar, whose electric guitar drones are nothing short of stunning, the album is a breathtaking journey into deep ambient territory. Every track is outstanding—an absolute must for fans of deep ambient music.
