Genji Sawai, a Japanese saxophonist who has been a supporting member of many major artists, has also produced funky and soulful jazz albums as a solo artist, such as "Skipjack" in 1981 and "Yellow" in 1982. Co-produced this third album with Bill Laswell's Material in 1984. The album is a masterpiece, full of innovative ideas for its time, actively incorporating hip-hop, which was beginning to emerge in New York at the time, and fusing the funkness of the previous album with the oriental sounds of traditional Japanese instruments such as the tsuzumi and narimono. The layers of effected live instruments and synthesizers are also very interesting, and be sure to pay attention to the more experimental tracks like A3 and B2.
