Released in 1983 under the name George Russell’s New York Band, this album is by American composer/pianist George Russell, who had been active since the 1950s and whose work ranged widely from solo pieces to jazz orchestra settings. Russell also made a profound impact both within and beyond the jazz world through his Lydian Chromatic Concept, a music theory system for harmony and improvisation. Featuring a 14-piece ensemble including Jerome Harris on guitar, Stanton Davis on trumpet, Ray Anderson on trombone, and Victor Lewis on drums, the album presents spiritual big band jazz that also absorbs elements of jazz-rock and jazz-funk. Jerome Harris’ guitar adds a particularly strong groove throughout, and every track is extended and deeply rewarding.
