Released in 1980, this album is by American composer and pianist George Russell, who had been active since the 1950s and whose work ranged widely from solo performances to jazz orchestra. Russell is also known for proposing the Lydian Chromatic Concept in 1953, an innovative theoretical system in jazz. This sextet recording features Lew Soloff on trumpet, Robert Moore on tenor and soprano saxophones, Victor Comer on guitar, J.F. Jenny-Clark on bass, and Keith Copeland on percussion. Opening with A1, where the brass blows passionately over a rhythm section full of funkiness, the album unfolds as a suite made up of 14 events, interspersed with drones created by Russell’s electronically processed organ and piano. Three of these events were composed by Jan Garbarek. A superb work of composition and performance that transcends the boundaries between jazz and contemporary music.
