This album was released in 1962 by a sextet led by American composer/pianist George Russell, who had been active since the 1950s and whose style ranged from solo to jazz orchestra. It features Steve Swallow (b), Pete La Roca (ds), Paul Plummer (ts), Garnett Brown (tb) and Don Ellis (tp). In addition to Russell's own score, the album features music by Charlie Parker and Carla Bley. The style is bebop, but it's quite broken up, and it's clear that they were trying a novel approach for 1962. In particular, B1, a modal cover of the standard number 'You are My Sunshine' featuring singer Sheila Jordan, is quite sophisticated. This is the US reissue released in 1968 with new artwork.
