An essential 1985 release from American pianist Geri Allen, well-known for her work alongside Oliver Lake, Dewey Redman, Steve Coleman, David Murray and more. Following her trio set The Printmakers with Andrew Cyrille and Anthony Cox, this is her second outing on the German Minor Music label — and here Allen goes it alone on piano for the entire program. With the exception of two Thelonious Monk standards, the session is filled with her own original compositions. Side A leans toward luminous, finely-etched pieces with a touch of minimalism in the phrasing, while Side B ventures deeper into avant-garde territory. A stunning solo performance that gracefully transcends the line between jazz and contemporary music.
