Highly regarded alongside Dollar Brand as one of South Africa’s greatest musicians, pianist and composer Gideon Nxumalo released his first album in 1962. Recorded live in September of that year at the Great Hall of Wits University in Johannesburg, the quintet features Dudu Pukwana (as), Kippie Moeketsi (as), Martin Mgijima (b), and Makaya Ntschoko (ds). From the driving groove of A1 propelled by a primal rhythm section, to pieces that fuse a wide range of musical ideas deeply rooted in indigenous African rhythms, this record captures the very essence of Cape Jazz. A truly outstanding album—most highly recommended. This is the 2019 reissue.
