This is an album released in 1980 by the Gil Evans Orchestra, led by Canadian pianist Gil Evans, who was one arm of Miles Davis' orchestra in the old days and later led his own group to fame as a leading jazz orchestra. It features Billy Harper, Joe Beck, Elvin Jones, Hubert Laws, Howard Johnson and many other musicians and was recorded in New York in 1971, and released in the same year. The album is a masterpiece of thrilling orchestral jazz that sounds like the soundtrack to a black movie, including A1 with its cool side-swinging funk rhythms and thick brass ensemble, and A3 with its groovy waltz beat. The psychedelic flavour is also present here, perhaps due to Joe Beck's guitar work.
