A superb 1981 release compiling recordings made in 1971 by Canadian pianist Gil Evans, a master who left behind numerous orchestral jazz masterpieces, including the celebrated collaboration with Airto Moreira, Misa Espiritual, also featured in the guidebook OBSCURE SOUND REVISED EDITION. The lineup alone says it all: Billy Harper, Joe Beck, Don Preston, Lenny White, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, Hannibal Marvin Peterson, Bruce Ditmas, and more. Across the entire album, Evans unfolds a deeply spiritual brand of orchestral jazz, enriched by his signature floating soundscapes, the evocative use of synthesizers including Mini Moog by Don Preston and Phil Davis, and the primitive vocalizations of Airto and Flora, all of which elevate the music with a strong ethnic and transcendent feeling.
