Released in 1980, this debut album as a leader is by American trombonist Glenn Ferris, who has appeared on recordings by numerous artists including Stevie Wonder, Billy Cobham, the Average White Band, and the Brothers Johnson. Recorded live that same year at the club Cardinal Paf in the Village Saint-Paul district of Paris, Ferris is accompanied by Collectif Planète Carrée, featuring Jean-Pierre Debarbat on tenor saxophone, Olivier Hutman on electric piano, Jacques Vidal on bass, and Donny Donable on drums. The entire program consists of original compositions by Ferris. Highlights include A4, driven by a light and highly enjoyable groove with a distinct Latin feel, and B1, an energetic jazz-rock number that races forward at full speed. There is plenty to enjoy throughout, while Hutman’s electric-piano playing is also superb.
