Graham Moncur III is a trombonist who played a prominent role in the avant-garde scene in the United States, ranging from bebop artists like Benie Golson, Herbie Hancock, and Jackie McLean in the 1960s to free jazz with musicians like Marion Brown and Archie Shepp. This album was released as the 22nd installment of the iconic BYG series "Actuel" in 1969. It features recordings made with a quintet including Alan Silva (bass), Andrew Cyrille (drums), Dave Burrell (piano), Roscoe Mitchell (alto sax, flute), and Archie Shepp (only on B1) in Paris, France, during the same year. A1 consists of a suite composed of four movements, where the members connect their solos while maintaining a gentle groove, inheriting the spirit of John Coltrane in the realm of Afro-spiritual jazz. B2 also presents deep evocative scenery reminiscent of Coltrane's "Love Supreme." The performances by the participating members are truly exceptional. Highly recommended album.
