Trombonist Graham Moncur III was at the forefront of the cutting-edge American scene in the 1960s, from the bop of Benie Golson, Herbie Hancock and Jackie McLean to the free jazz of Marion Brown and Archie Shepp, and in the 1970s he left behind a body of spiritual avant-jazz work with The Jazz Composers Orchestra. This is his second leader album on Blue Note in 1965. Quintet with Wayne Shorter (ts), Herbie Hancock (p), Cecil McBee (b) and Anthony Williams (ds). While focusing on theme and ensemble without going for impulsive interplay, A1 charts a very different sonic horizon from conventional bebop. It seems to me to be ahead of Miles Davis in suggesting the direction in which jazz is looking next. High-quality heavyweight vinyl released in 1995 as part of the 'Blue Note Connoisseur Series'. Highly recommended.
