A masterpiece released in 1982 by Atrium Musicae, an early music ensemble formed in Madrid in 1964 by Gregorio Paniagua, a Madrid-born performer of historical instruments and one of the leading figures in early music research. Gregorio Paniagua was the elder brother of Luis Paniagua, one of the key figures in the Spanish contemporary/new age scene, known for bringing Arabic and Mediterranean classical music into a modern musical context. Gregorio himself was a truly singular musician who revived ancient Greek music and other forms of early music for the present day, and in Japan he is also known for having been praised by the late audio critic Tetsuo Nagaoka for the excellence of his recordings. This album also features Luis, their brother Eduardo, and others. While rooted in the early music of medieval Spain, it makes full use of a wide range of ethnic instruments to create a wonderfully exotic and atmospheric form of ethnic music. Highly recommended as a key root work for those interested in the music of Babia, Luis Delgado, and Orquesta De Las Nubes, all introduced in the Spain feature of the guidebook OBSCURE SOUND REVISED EDITION. The sound quality is also absolutely superb.
