German multi-instrumentalist Gunter Hampel, who began his career in the early 1950s and released works on labels such as ESP Disk in the 1960s, also participated as a member in the European activities of Cecil Taylor and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. This album, released in 1978 on his own label Birth Records, features Jeanne Lee (vocals), Perry Robinson (clarinet), Thomas Keyserling (alto sax, flute), Martin Bues (drums, percussion), and Mark Whitecage (alto sax, flute, alto clarinet). Track A1 opens with a strikingly distinctive theme alongside Jeanne’s husky vocals. On A2, Hampel’s lustrous vibraphone melodies are gently interwoven with flute and saxophone in soft interplay. The long-form B1 unfolds with dynamic improvisation and expressive variation. Among the releases on this label, the crisp and well-defined sound quality of this album stands out especially. Highly recommended.

A1: While You Think, Keep
A2: Hope
B1: All is Real
