Released in 1972 on his own Birth Records label, this album is by German multi-instrumentalist Gunter Hampel, who began his career in the early 1950s, recorded for labels including ESP-Disk in the 1960s, and also performed with Cecil Taylor and the Art Ensemble of Chicago during their activities in Europe. It is one of twelve titles issued as part of the Jubilee Edition: 15 Years Gunter Hampel Group (1958–1973) series. Recorded in New York by Gunter Hampel and his Galaxie Dream Band, the album features a nine-piece ensemble including Jeanne Lee on vocals, Perry Robinson on clarinet, Mark Whitecage on alto clarinet, and Allan Praskin on alto saxophone. Beginning with Lee’s magical vocalizations, the performance gradually moves into thrilling, free-form improvisation that completely draws the listener in.
A1 contains some intermittent buzzing noise that appears to have been caused during pressing. The same issue was present on other copies we have handled.
