An album released in 1975 by German multi-instrumentalist Gunter Hampel, who began his career in the early 1950s and recorded for ESP Disk in the 1960s. He was also a member of Cecil Taylor’s and the Art Ensemble of Chicago’s European projects. This masterpiece features an exceptional lineup, including Jeanne Lee (vocals), Perry Robinson (clarinet), and Steve McCall (drums). Highlights include A1, where Lee’s floating scat vocals are endlessly mesmerizing, and A2, where the distorted tones of the bass clarinet intertwine with her poetic voice. Throughout the album, magical improvisations fully utilize the unconventional instrumentation. Highly recommended.
A1: Look at Me for What I truly am, Rather Than That What You Believe Me to Be
A2: Mystic, Pilgrimmage
