A 1976 album by Gus Vali and his group, one of the key acts associated with New York’s immigrant nightclub scene, where Greek, Turkish, Middle Eastern music and American jazz were blended together. Originally issued by Musicor in the early 1970s, the album compiles 16 tracks selected from five albums Vali released during the 1960s. The music is rooted in what was known at the time as the “Eastern Mediterranean mix,” a style heard in Greek, Armenian, Turkish, and Middle Eastern nightclubs across New York. Traditional instruments such as oud and darbuka are combined with Western instruments including clarinet and saxophone, creating an exotic sound that draws on traditional music from the Arab world as well as film music and lounge styles. A very enjoyable collection. Includes an insert featuring an introduction to belly dancing.
