A 1981 album by shamisen player and singer Harue Momoyama, who came from the world of traditional Japanese performing arts, including kouta and hauta, but went on to pursue a remarkably free musical path outside the conventional iemoto system of traditional Japanese music. Following the 1979 masterpiece Hiki Yomi Gusa, recorded with Ryuichi Sakamoto on synthesizer, and the 1981 album Asobi wo Sento ya Umareken, based on Ryojin Hisho, a collection of songs from the late Heian period, this album was produced by music critic Toyo Nakamura. Alongside Momoyama’s own compositions, the record includes traditional songs and pieces transcribed from Onusa, a collection published during the Edo period. Particularly outstanding are A7, an Arab traditional song featuring oud player Hamza El Din, a master of the traditional music of Nubia—the region stretching from around Aswan in southern Egypt into Sudan—and B5, a beautifully borderless, stateless song that transcends any single musical tradition.
