Released in 1975, this album by Hawkwind—one of Britain’s definitive space-psychedelic rock bands and true embodiments of hippie culture—is also one of their greatest masterpieces. Drawing upon the visionary world of science-fiction writer Michael Moorcock, the album achieves a remarkable unity of concept, composition, performance, and art direction, resulting in an overwhelming psychedelic epic. The transition across A3 and A4 is especially devastating: a collage of natural sounds and Moorcock’s poetry drenched in deep delay gradually gives way to a tightly locked rhythm fading into view, completely pulling the listener into its world.
