Featured here is a 1978 masterpiece by Puerto Rican singer Héctor Lavoe, who joined Willie Colón’s band as a vocalist at just 17 and later built an acclaimed career both as a solo artist and as a member of the Fania All-Stars. Lavoe’s greatest appeal lies in his lustrous voice and deeply melancholic, emotionally charged delivery, and this album captures those qualities at their fullest. A1, written by Rubén Blades, is a classic that was also selected by Joe Claussell for one of his own compilation albums.
