American flutist Herbie Mann, who began collaborating with numerous artists and groups in the mid-1940s and went on to release a wealth of acclaimed recordings under his own name, released this album in 1970. It features an impressive lineup of musicians associated with the same label, including Sonny Sharrock (guitar), Roy Ayers (vibraphone), Ron Carter (bass), Miroslav Vitous (bass), and Bruno Carr (drums), along with violin, cello, and other string players. While Mann is best known for his thematic explorations of Latin, Brazilian, and disco styles, this album takes a remarkably deep and mysterious approach, perhaps reflecting the label’s darker tonal aesthetic. Sharrock’s guitar work is outstanding throughout. Interestingly, though no pianist is credited, there are moments where piano or organ-like tones can be heard—perhaps Ayers, though it remains a mystery. An excellent and highly recommended album from start to finish.
