Released in 1976, this double-LP brings together original compositions by Hozan Yamamoto, the legendary shakuhachi master whose achievements extended far beyond the realm of classical traditional music into deeply contemporary territory. Across the set you’ll find a wide range of formations: an ensemble piece for shakuhachi, percussion, and voice on A1; a solo shakuhachi work on A2; a shakuhachi quartet on B2; and an ensemble for shakuhachi and percussion on C1, among others. The album features collaborations with leading figures from the Japanese traditional and contemporary music worlds, including Katsuya Yokoyama, Tadao Sawai, Roetsu Tosha, Hidehiko Sato, and more. Spanning two LPs, the music pushes far beyond the boundaries of tradition, presenting a boldly forward-looking vision of contemporary Japanese music. It still sounds strikingly fresh today. Highly recommended.
