Hozan Yamamoto, a shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) player of the Tozan school who received the title of Living National Treasure in 2002, continued to pursue new challenges not only in classical music but also in jazz, contemporary music, and avant-garde. In 1974, he released a masterpiece album featuring compositions by the composer Ryohei Hirose. On side A, there are two shakuhachi solo pieces composed and dedicated to Yamamoto, while on side B, there are compositions for shakuhachi, cello, and percussion, as well as compositions for shakuhachi, cello, children's choir, and percussion, all created for Yamamoto's recital. Yamamoto's shakuhachi evokes a profound and mysterious landscape like a dry landscape garden (karesansui), and track B2, which conveys a very deep spirituality composed based on Indian philosophy, creates tension reminiscent of the climax of "2001: A Space Odyssey." Simply wonderful. The three-fold insert is also beautifully crafted. Highly recommended album.
