Constantly pursuing new musical challenges that extend beyond the classical realm into jazz, contemporary, and avant-garde music, the late Hozan Yamamoto, a Tozan-ryu shakuhachi master who was designated a Living National Treasure in 2002, joined forces with one of Japan’s leading jazz pianists, Masahiko Satoh, on this masterful 1986 release. Since his 1969 debut with the leader album Palladium, Satoh has remained at the forefront of the scene through his innovative collaborations and boundary-pushing approach. Here, performing as a duo of shakuhachi and acoustic piano, the two artists—each possessing profound musical spirituality—create a sound world brimming with positive energy, weaving melodies that move gracefully and sensuously, sometimes with lightness, sometimes with depth. Whether interpreted as jazz, contemporary music, new age, or chamber music, this is simply extraordinary music. Highly recommended for fans of ECM-style soundscapes.
