Released in 1981 by a trio led by Daniel Humair, the great drummer who has long been a driving force in the French avant-jazz scene, including his collaborations with Henri Texier, with pianist Jim McNeely and bassist Mike Richmond. From the fast-moving A1, carrying forward the spirit of John Coltrane’s “sheets of sound,” to the beautifully buoyant piano lines of McNeely on A3, the album offers a refined performance that moves naturally from post-bop to elegant contemporary jazz, never relying on flashy gimmicks but unfolding with superb interplay and breathing room between the players. Especially recommended are A3, with its subtly blended Brazilian flavor, and A2/B2, where Richmond’s woody bass sings out with a rich melodic presence. Second edition with alternate jacket coloring.
