Released in 1980, this album is by New Directions, the group led by American jazz drummer and pianist Jack DeJohnette, whose extensive career includes work with Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, and numerous other major artists, as well as many outstanding recordings for ECM. The album documents a 1979 concert in Switzerland and features a quartet of musicians closely associated with ECM: Lester Bowie of the Art Ensemble of Chicago on trumpet, John Abercrombie on guitar, and Eddie Gomez on bass. A1 is a superb piece of spiritual Latin jazz, with Bowie’s ethnic-inflected trumpet—at times recalling Don Cherry—floating over DeJohnette’s finely detailed yet dynamic drumming. A2 is equally striking, beginning in a restrained, gently drifting mood before gradually building in intensity. Throughout the album, the quartet delivers a thrilling live performance charged with tension and spontaneity. The vivid, highly atmospheric recording quality is equally impressive.
