American jazz drummer/pianist Jack DeJohnette, who has been active since the 1960s and has played on numerous sessions, has also played on many ECM albums, including those of Dave Holland, Gary Burton, Keith Jarrett, and Richie Beirach, and has performed his excellent drumming on a considerable number of ECM albums. This album was released in 1980, with David Murray(ts,b-cn), Arthur Blythe(as), Peter Warren(b,cello). All of the songs are DeJohnette's own compositions, except for two songs by John Coltrane. The depth and localization of the sound of the various parts scattered throughout the sound field are extraordinary, giving the listener a tremendous sense of presence, as if the performance were unfolding right in front of their eyes. The horn and string ensemble on B1 resonates beautifully, and B2, a cover of a Coltrane classic with a gem of an arrangement full of peaceful energy, is wonderful.
