This is a 1980 release by the American jazz drummer/pianist Jack DeJohnette, who has showcased remarkable drumming skills in numerous sessions since the 1960s, collaborating with artists such as Dave Holland, Gary Burton, Keith Jarrett, Kenny Werner, and Richie Beirach, as well as contributing to a considerable number of ECM records. This album is a leader album featuring a quartet with David Murray (tenor saxophone, bass clarinet), Arthur Blythe (alto saxophone), and Peter Warren (bass, cello). Apart from covering two John Coltrane compositions on side B, all compositions are by DeJohnette himself. While some tracks lean towards free jazz, the depth and positioning of each scattered sound within the sonic field create an intense sense of presence, as if the performance is unfolding right in front of you. Tracks like B1, where the ensemble of horns and strings resonates beautifully, and the gem of an arrangement filled with peaceful energy in B2, both Coltrane covers, are particularly outstanding. This reissue from 1985 on Polydor features direct digital mastering from the original master tapes and heavyweight vinyl, ensuring high-quality sound reproduction. This series is known for its exceptional sound quality, even among Japanese ECM releases.
