Released in 1977 under the name Jack DeJohnette’s Directions, this album is by American drummer Jack DeJohnette, who has performed on countless sessions with artists including Miles Davis and Keith Jarrett and has also left behind numerous masterpieces for ECM.
A quartet recording with Alex Foster on tenor and soprano saxophones, John Abercrombie on guitar, and Mike Richmond on bass. A1 opens beautifully with the bass quietly repeating a minimal phrase as cymbals and guitar drift and sway like falling leaves. A2 is an endlessly beautiful duet between Foster’s soprano saxophone and DeJohnette’s piano, while B1 is propelled by DeJohnette’s solid, aggressively driving drumming. The dynamic shifts between stillness and intensity weave the entire album into a single unfolding narrative. Original German pressing.

A1: Minya’s The Mooch
