Released in 1976, this album as a leader is by American drummer Jack DeJohnette, whose exceptional performances can be heard on numerous ECM recordings. The quintet features John Abercrombie on guitar, Alex Foster on tenor and soprano saxophones, Mike Richmond on bass, and Warren Bernhardt on piano. The album presents deep, spiritual, and aggressively charged contemporary jazz throughout, but A3 is especially outstanding: DeJohnette’s funk-filled drumming intertwines with Abercrombie’s psychedelic wah-wah guitar and Foster’s abstract saxophone to create a superb piece of jazz-funk. DeJohnette’s drumming is truly remarkable, overflowing with profound spirituality and irresistible groove. Original German pressing with laminated sleeve.
