American saxophonist Jackie McLean, who began making a name for himself as a teenager by performing with Kenny Drew and Sonny Rollins and recording with Miles Davis in 1951, released this album on Prestige in 1956. After debuting as a leader with The New Tradition on Ad Lib in 1955, he went on to leave behind numerous masterpieces on Prestige and Blue Note. This quintet recording features Mal Waldron (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and 'Philly' Joe Jones (drums), along with 23-year-old newcomer Bill Hardman (trumpet). While McLean’s impeccable chemistry with the rock-solid rhythm section is a given, Hardman’s vibrant trumpet playing leaves a particularly strong impression.
