Released in 1984 on Germany’s Erdenklang label, this album by the great UK progressive / experimental rock group Jade Warrior stands as one of their hidden later-period gems. Created after the psychedelic rock sensibility of their Vertigo years and the Eastern philosophy, world music, and ambient soundscapes of their Island period, the album beautifully connects the group’s earlier vision with the clear, refined textures of 1980s digital production. Reportedly conceived from ideas for film music, it features the expansive suite A1, unfolding through drone-like sonorities, floating guitar and saxophone, and spacious rhythmic passages; B1, where Eastern-tinged melodies spread around the flute; and B2, with its quiet, deeply atmospheric ambient feel. A superb work where progressive rock, new age, ambient, and world music intersect, blending crystalline digital production with Jade Warrior’s unmistakably exotic and cinematic sensibility.
A1: Image of Dune
B1: East Wind
B2: Grey Lake, Red Mountain
