Released in 1984 by James Newton, a flautist rooted in free jazz yet also known for a number of works that approach new age music through the use of natural acoustic phenomena such as echoes and resonances created by geological formations. This album is another work that leans deeply into that new age sensibility, featuring solo flute recordings made in Echo Canyon, a circular landform shaped by erosion within Carson National Forest in New Mexico, USA. Set within a natural acoustic space where birdsong gently reverberates, the earthy tones of flute, Bolivian wood flute and bass flute rise skyward with beautifully lingering echoes. A superb piece of meditation music in which sound and nature seem to merge completely.
