American flutist James Newton, who has recorded with numerous great players including Herbie Hancock, Sam Rivers, and Anthony Davis, and has also made many solo works leaning toward new age, released this leader album on the prestigious Blue Note label in 1987. The session features a superb lineup centered around Abdul Wadud on cello, Rick Rozie on bass, and Pheeroan akLaff on drums, with Steve Turre on trombone, Robin Eubanks on trombone, Jay Hoggard on vibraphone, and Geri Allen on piano. While inheriting the language of blues and bop, Newton’s free-flowing emotional expression and vivid sense of musical imagery are truly outstanding throughout. Among the highlights, the closing track B2 is especially recommended, featuring Newton’s flute and Hoggard’s vibraphone dancing organically over a relaxed yet richly layered horn ensemble.
