Released in 1977, this album is by Norwegian reed player Jan Garbarek, who created numerous deeply spiritual masterpieces for Germany’s ECM while continually pursuing a musical world entirely his own. He is joined by Oregon guitarist Ralph Towner, while Den Norske Messingsekstett contributes wind harp and brass. Garbarek’s lustrous, soaring saxophone—already unmistakably his own signature sound—blends beautifully with Towner’s twelve-string guitar and the delicately spreading tones of the wind harp, creating an imaginative world of great beauty tinged with a subtle sense of shadow. The more than thirteen-minute A1 floats with a singular texture alongside Towner’s finely detailed guitar playing. B3 is especially deep: against a drone created by the wind harp, Garbarek’s wooden flute resonates in ethnic scales like the chanting of a sutra. Original German pressing with laminated sleeve.
