A 1977 album by Norwegian reed player Jan Garbarek, who left behind numerous spiritually charged masterpieces on ECM while pursuing a highly distinctive musical vision. Oregon guitarist Ralph Towner appears alongside Den Norske Messingsekstett, contributing wind harp and brass. Garbarek’s glossy, soaring saxophone—already unmistakably his own by this point—blends beautifully with Towner’s 12-string guitar and the delicately spreading tones of the wind harp, creating an imaginative sound world that is both luminous and slightly shadowed. A1, stretching beyond 13 minutes, floats with a unique texture around Towner’s intricate guitar work, while B3 is especially deep, with Garbarek’s wood flute sounding almost like a chant over a wind-harp drone, tracing out an ethnic-inflected scale with a meditative intensity.
